Product Labelling and Packaging Laws

Indian law does not permit any wholesale dealer, distributor or importer to sell, distribute or display any commodity in the packaged form which is misbranded and non-compliant with the statutory labelling requirements. The cases of misbranding, incomplete labelling, non-compliance to standards, misleading and unethical advertisement may lead to serious prosecutions.

The Labelling of food products are governed under the Food Safety and Standards Act.

The labeling requirements for packaged commodities are gover ned by the Legal Metrology Act and are applicable to persons engaged in:

Manufacturing
Retail or wholesale dealing
Repairing of any weight or measure
Manufacturing, importing and/or packaging any item
Persons who are using any weight or measure in any transaction or industrial
production or protection.
